Qiyamah,The Day of Judgment: A Complete Islamic Guide to the End of Times
There will come a day when the entire universe—humanity, animals, jinn, angels, the skies, and everything in between—will be annihilated. Nothing will remain except Allah (SWT) alone. This is the inevitable reality known as Qiyamah, the Day of Judgment.
Before this final day unfolds, a series of signs, both minor and major, will appear as prophesied in the Quran and Hadith. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the prophesied signs of the end times, the great trials to come, the roles of the Dajjal, Imam Mahdi (AS), and Prophet Isa (AS), the emergence of Gog and Magog, and the ultimate reality of Jannah (Heaven) and Jahannam (Hell).
We request you to read this article with an open heart and share this crucial knowledge with your friends and family, so that we may all reflect and prepare.
The Prophesied Signs Before the End
The arrival of the Day of Judgment will be preceded by clear signs. These signs mark a world steeped in moral and spiritual decay. The Hadith mentions several key indicators:
-
Social and Moral Collapse:
-
Loss of Knowledge: Religious knowledge will be lifted from the world, and ignorance will prevail.
-
Prevalence of Sin: The consumption of alcohol and the act of Zina (adultery and fornication) will become widespread and openly practiced.
-
Gender Imbalance: The number of men will decrease while the number of women will increase drastically, to the extent that one man will be responsible for fifty women.
-
Breakdown of Family: Children will disobey and expel their parents from their homes. Men will obey their wives over their mothers and prioritize friends over their fathers.
-
Corruption in Leadership: The most vile and deceitful individuals will become leaders. People who were once barefoot and destitute will compete in constructing lofty buildings.
-
Spiritual Hardship: Following Islam will become as difficult as holding a burning coal in one’s hand. People will pass by graves and wish they were in them instead.
-
-
Cosmic and Natural Signs:
-
Earth Swallowing People: The earth will swallow people in three places: in the East, in the West, and in the Arabian Peninsula.
-
Abundance of Wealth: Wealth will become so abundant that finding someone to accept charity will be difficult. The deserts of Arabia will transform into gardens and rivers.
-
The River Euphrates’ Treasure: The Euphrates River will dry up, revealing a mountain of gold, over which people will fight and kill each other.
-
Distortion of Time: Time will pass incredibly quickly. A year will feel like a month, a month like a week, and a day like the time it takes for a palm leaf to burn.
-
Animals Speaking to Humans: Wild animals and even inanimate objects will communicate with people.
-
The Sun Rising from the West: This is one of the final major signs. After this, the doors of repentance (Tawbah) will be permanently closed, and no new declaration of faith will be accepted.
-
The Great Trials: Dajjal, Imam Mahdi, and the Return of Prophet Isa (AS)
As the final hour approaches, humanity will face its greatest trials.
-
The Dajjal (The Antichrist):
Before the main Dajjal, about 30 minor dajjals will appear, each claiming to be a prophet. The Great Dajjal will be a one-eyed man with the word “Kafir” (disbeliever) written on his forehead, readable by every believer. He will claim to be God and will possess deceptive powers. He will have with him a “paradise” and a “hellfire”—his paradise will be actual hellfire, and his hellfire will be a place of comfort. He will command the skies to rain, bring the dead back to life, and make barren lands fertile, all through magic and deceit. He will travel the entire world for 40 days (the first day like a year, the second like a month, the third like a week, and the rest normal), but he will be prevented from entering Makkah and Madinah. -
The Arrival of Imam Mahdi (AS):
At a time of widespread oppression, Imam Mahdi (AS) will emerge. He will be from the progeny of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and will re-establish justice and righteousness, raising the flag of Islam once again. He will be recognized by the righteous while performing Tawaf of the Kaaba, and a voice from the heavens will declare, “This is the Caliph of Allah, the Mahdi. Listen to him and obey him.” -
The Descent of Prophet Isa (Jesus, AS):
When the Dajjal is spreading his corruption in the region of Sham (the Levant), Prophet Isa (AS) will descend from the heavens upon the eastern minaret of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. This will be during the time of Fajr prayer. The very scent of his breath will cause the Dajjal to melt. Prophet Isa (AS) will pursue and defeat the Dajjal, bringing his great trial to an end.
Gog and Magog (Yajuj and Majuj)
After the defeat of the Dajjal, the tribes of Gog and Magog, who were imprisoned behind a wall by Dhul-Qarnain (AS), will break free. They are from the descendants of Prophet Nuh (AS) and will be immense in number. They will swarm the earth, causing unimaginable destruction, consuming all vegetation, water, and even people. Prophet Isa (AS) will lead the believers to Mount Tur for safety and will pray to Allah, who will then destroy Gog and Magog.
The Final Events of Qiyamah
-
The Beast of the Earth (Dabbah al-Ard): A unique creature will emerge from Mount Safa. It will carry the staff of Prophet Musa (AS) and the ring of Prophet Sulaiman (AS). It will mark the forehead of every believer with a shining mark from the staff and the forehead of every disbeliever with a dark seal from the ring, clearly distinguishing between them.
-
The Final Years and the Scented Wind: Prophet Isa (AS) will rule with justice for 40 years, marry, and have children. After his passing, a cold, fragrant wind will blow from the direction of Yemen. This wind will gently take the soul of every believer, leaving only the disbelievers on Earth. For the last 40 years of the world, no children will be born, and the name of Allah will not be mentioned.
-
The Blowing of the Trumpet (Sur):
When only disbelievers remain, Allah will command Angel Israfil (AS) to blow the trumpet. The first blow will be soft, then grow terrifyingly loud, causing everyone to fall unconscious and die. Everything will be destroyed—the heavens, the earth, mountains, and even the angel of death. Only Allah will remain. -
The Resurrection and the Gathering (Yawm al-Hashr):
After a period known only to Allah, He will resurrect Israfil (AS) and command him to blow the trumpet a second time. At this blow, all souls from the beginning of time to the end will be resurrected. People will emerge from their graves, and their book of deeds will be handed to them. Everyone will be gathered in the Plain of Assembly (Maidan al-Hashr).
The Day of Reckoning
On this Day, the earth will be like copper, and the sun will be brought extremely close. The heat will be so intense that people’s brains will boil. People will sweat according to their deeds—for some, it will reach their ankles, for others their knees, and for some, it will submerge them completely. This day will last for 50,000 years.
-
The Intercession (Shafa’ah):
In desperation, people will seek an intercessor. They will go to Prophet Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (peace be upon them all), but each will excuse themselves. Finally, they will come to the master of all prophets, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He will say, “I am for it,” and will prostrate before Allah. Allah will say, “O Muhammad, raise your head. Ask, and you shall be given. Intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.” Through his intercession, the judgment will begin. -
The Bridge of Sirat:
Every person will have to cross the Bridge of Sirat, which is laid over Hellfire and is described as being sharper than a sword and thinner than a hair. The believers will cross it with a speed according to their deeds—some like lightning, some like the wind, and some crawling—while the disbelievers and sinners will fall into Hell.
The Eternal Abodes: Jannah and Jahannam
-
Jannah (Heaven): For the righteous, Jannah is an abode of unimaginable bliss. Its walls are made of bricks of gold and silver, its soil is of saffron and musk, and its pebbles are pearls. It has 100 levels, each as vast as the distance between the heavens and the earth. There will be fruits and foods never seen before, thousands of servants, and beautiful companions (Hoor). There will be no sickness, fear, or death. Every desire will be fulfilled, and the greatest reward will be the sight of Allah (SWT).
-
Jahannam (Hellfire): For the wicked, Jahannam is a place of eternal torment. Its fire is so intense that a needle-sized hole from it would destroy the world. It is a place of utter darkness. Its inhabitants will be punished with giant serpents and scorpions, their heads smashed with iron hammers. Their food will be the thorny fruit of Zaqqum, and their drink will be boiling water and pus. They will beg for death, but death will never come.
After everyone has entered their final abode, Death itself will be brought in the form of a ram and slaughtered between Heaven and Hell, sealing the eternity of both realms.
A Call for Reflection
My dear brothers and sisters, this life is a test, and our deeds are being recorded. Let us strive to perform righteous acts and abandon our sins today. Jahannam is a terrible destination. May Allah protect us all from it, grant us the highest station in Jannah, and bless us with the intercession of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his blessed company, and the ultimate reward of seeing Allah (SWT).
Ameen.
